Our History
Rev. Fr. Bernardine M. Louis OCD, a member of the Discalced Carmelite Order belonging to the South Kerala Province inspired by the Lord wished to found a women religious Congregation. Since he began manifold works of charity especially for the poor and destitute boys and girls of the rural and coastal areas in the Diocese of Trivandrum, Fr. Bernardine was looking for someone to carry forward his vision and mission in the Church. Carmelites of Divine Mercy is the fruit of such a desire, long discernment and years of prayer of Fr. Bernardine. Having gathered sufficient information about the life and activities of Fr. Bernardine OCD and having convinced of the Charism that God has given him within his fundamental call to be a Carmelite and recommended by the then Definitor General V. Rev. Fr. Augustine Mulloor OCD, the Superior General of the Discalced Carmelites Very Rev. Fr. Saverio Cannistra OCD, requested and recommended His Grace Most. Rev. Dr. M. Soosai Pakiam, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Trivandrum to grant Rev. Fr. Bernardine M. Louis OCD permission to found a Women Religious Congregation with the name "Carmelites of Divine Mercy". The Archbishop having witnessed the charismatic presence and innumerable charitable activities initiated by Fr. Bernardine for the welfare of the poor, said “since you are devoted to Divine Mercy I will give you permission to found the Congregation on Divine Mercy Feast day”, which happen to be Sunday April 11, 2010. It was officially inaugurated on July 16, 2010 on the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel by His Grace Most Rev. Soosai Pakiam, the Archbishop of Trivandrum in the presence of Most Rev. Dr. Selvister Ponnumuthan, Bishop of Punalur, Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Mar Iraneus, Auxiliary Bishop of Trivandrum Malankara and in the presence of several Major Superiors, OCD Provincials, many other religious and priests.
